Ans. The postmaster, moved by Lencho's faith in God, decided to help him by responding to his letter with money. He asked for donations from his employees and friends and was able to collect seventy pesos. He then put the money in an envelope addressed to Lencho and signed it 'God'. When Lencho received and counted the money, he became angry because it was less than the hundred pesos he had requested. He immediately wrote a second letter to God, demanding the remaining thirty pesos, believing that the post office employees had stolen the missing amount.
2. How did the hailstones affect Lencho's field? What was Lencho's only hope?
Ans. The hailstorm was catastrophic for Lencho's crops. It hailed for an hour, covering the field with ice like a sheet of salt. The hailstones completely destroyed the ripe corn crop. Lencho felt utter sadness, as he feared his family would go hungry for the year. After the destruction, Lencho's only hope was the help from God. He believed God would not let them starve and hence, he wrote a letter asking for a hundred pesos to sow his field again.
Nelson Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom
3. How did Mandela's 'hunger for freedom' change his life?
Ans. As a student, Mandela only wanted freedom for himself, seeing freedom as temporary and personal. However, he gradually realized that his freedom and the freedom of his people were curtailed. This personal desire transformed into a greater hunger for the freedom of his people. This change transformed him from a fearful young man into a bold one, from a law-abiding attorney into a criminal, and from a family man into a dedicated monk. He joined the African National Congress and fought to liberate his people from the chains of oppression.

6. What is the story about the Kodavu people's descent?
Ans. The Kodavu people of Coorg are fiercely independent and are believed to be the descendants of either Greeks or Arabs. The Greek theory suggests that a part of Alexander's army moved south along the coast and settled there. They could not return to their country, and their martial traditions and marriage rites suggest this Greek origin. The Arabic descent theory is supported by the long, black, embroidered 'Kuppia' they wear, which resembles the 'Kuffia' worn by the Arabs and Kurds.

Robert Frost believes that the world can end either way. He holds with those who favour fire (desire) as the most probable cause of destruction due to human passion.
